Els gitanos (també anomenats zíngars, bohemis, calés o romanís) són un grup ètnic divers que viu principalment a l'Europa del Sud i de l'Est, l'Orient mitjà, Turquia, als EUA i Amèrica Llatina. Es creu que la major part prové de les regions índies de Panjab[46] i el Rajasthan. Van emigrar cap a Europa i el nord d'Àfrica per l'Iran, al voltant de l'any 1050.[47] A l'estat espanyol es fa servir sovint el terme calé per a referir-se a la persona i caló per a referir-se a la llengua pròpia d'aquesta ètnia.

Com que el nom de gitano pot tenir connotacions pejoratives, hi ha la proposta recent de dir-ne romaní o simplement rom (en romaní: home o marit). R-rom tant per al poble com per a l'idioma, si bé no hi ha encara acord sobre l'existència o no del doble fonema "r-r" a les llengües gitanes centreeuropees.
