Chetana Nagavajara (Thai: เจตนา นาควัชระ RTGSChettana Nakwatchara; born 19 July 1937)[1] is a Professor Emeritus of German language at Silpakorn University.[2] His career includes significant contributions to both academia and higher education administration in the country.

Throughout his tenure at Silpakorn University, Nagavajara was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1976 to 1979 and the Vice President of the university from 1979 to 1981. He actively participated in shaping national policies for higher education, holding various government-appointed positions in administration.[3][4]

Nagavajara's scholarly pursuits have been multifaceted. He initially focused on comparative literature and German literature. His output includes numerous publications catering to both general and academic audiences, across Thai, English, and German languages. His noteworthy awards include the Goethe Medal, the Humboldt Research Award, and the Narathip Award.[5] He has received honorary doctorate degrees from five universities in Thailand, as well as the University of Tübingen in Germany.

Through his scholarly contributions and public engagements, Nagavajara is a leading figure in Thailand's arts criticism movement.[6][7]

Nagavajara has received international exposure and various government grants. His engagements with academic communities in the United States and Germany played a significant role in bridging Western academic perspectives with Thailand's academic landscape.[8]
