Donald Trump, who served as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021, announced his campaign for a nonconsecutive second presidential term in the 2024 U.S. presidential election on November 15, 2022. After he won a landslide victory in the 2024 Iowa Republican presidential caucuses, Trump was generally described as being the Republican Party's presumptive nominee for president,[8][9] with a process of consolidation then underway.[10] He was officially nominated on July 15, 2024 at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, when he also announced JD Vance, the junior U.S. Senator from Ohio, as the nominee for vice president and campaign partner. Trump then accepted his nomination during the final day of the convention on July 18,[11] If elected into office, Trump will become the oldest president in American history by the end of his term and the second to serve a non-consecutive term after Grover Cleveland.
Trump has campaigned on vastly expanding the authority of the executive branch over the federal government.[12] This would be accomplished through the imposition of the Jacksonian spoils system,[13][14] and directing the U.S. Department of Justice to go after domestic political enemies.[15] Other campaign issues include: implementing anti-immigrant policies and a massive deportation operation;[16] pursuing an isolationist "America First" foreign policy agenda;[17][18] repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act;[19][20] pursuing a climate change denial and anti-clean energy platform;[21][22][23] terminating the Department of Education;[22] implementing anti-LGBT policies;[24][25][22] and pursuing what has been described as a neomercantilist trade agenda.[26][27]
Beginning as early as Veterans Day in November 2023, Trump leaned into violent and authoritarian rhetoric throughout his campaign.[28][29][30][31] Trump has increasingly used dehumanizing and violent rhetoric against his political enemies.[28][32][33] His 2024 campaign has been identified as leaning into nativist[34] and anti-transgender rhetoric.[35]
The Trump campaign has been noted for its close connections to The Heritage Foundation, which produced Project 2025,[36][15][31] a playbook criticized as an attempt for Trump to become a dictator and a path leading the United States toward autocracy, with several experts in law criticizing it for violating current constitutional laws that would undermine the rule of law and the separation of powers.[37][38] Although in April 2022 when he addressed the Heritage Foundation, Trump lauded the plans being developed by them for the next Republican administration,[39] since public concern about the Project 2025 developed Trump has denied affiliation with it, calling some of the proposals "absolutely ridiculous" and "seriously extreme."[40][41][42][43]
The campaign is unfolding as Trump faces the legal aftermath of four criminal indictments filed against him in 2023, as well as a civil investigation of the Trump Organization in New York. The campaign has continued to promote false claims that the former 2020 election was stolen,[44] and comes in the wake of Trump's unprecedented attempts to overturn the 2020 United States presidential election[45][46] and its culmination in the January 6 United States Capitol attack,[47][48] described by many as an attempted coup d'état[49][50] or self-coup.[51][52] Trump has publicly embraced[53] the January 6 attack, and has promised to pardon those charged for their involvement in the attack.[54][55][56]
On May 30, 2024, Trump was convicted of all 34 felony counts for business fraud related to hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels in an attempt to influence the 2016 presidential election. He is the first former U.S. president in history to be convicted of a crime.[57] On July 13, 2024, Trump survived an attempted assassination by Thomas Matthew Crooks, who shot at Trump and injured the top of his right ear at a 2024 presidential campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania.[58][59]
"The Iowa results confirm a compelling consensus that Trump will be the nominee and there is nothing anyone can do about it absent an act of God or the courts," Jowers said.
"Republican voters see him as the inevitable nominee, and they're already falling in line," he added.
