Typically, Friends meeting houses are simple and resemble local residential buildings. Steeples, spires, and ornamentation are usually avoided.^{[citation needed]}

When Quakers speak of a "church," it generally refers to the persons of the worshipping community, rather than the building itself.^{[citation needed]}
