The National Union Party was a wartime coalition of Republicans, War Democrats, and border state Unionists who supported the nominees of the National Union Convention in the 1864 presidential election.[1] The name was used to attract pro-administration Democrats and border state unionists who supported Abraham Lincoln's efforts to preserve the Union, but might hesitate to affiliate with Lincoln's Republican party. The party nominated Lincoln for president and Democrat Andrew Johnson of Tennessee for vice president; the pair received 212 electoral votes to 21 for the Democratic ticket of George B. McClellan and George H. Pendleton.
