Sophrony the Athonite (born Sergei Symeonovich Sakharov; 23 September 1896 – 11 July 1993), known also as Elder Sophrony or Father Sophrony, was a Russian-born Orthodox Christian archimandrite and one of the most noted ascetic monks of the 20th century.[1] He is best known as the disciple and biographer of Silouan the Athonite and compiler of his works, and also as the founder of the Patriarchal Stavropegic Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Tolleshunt Knights, Maldon, Essex, England.[citation needed]

Sophrony was canonised by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople on 27 November 2019.[2][3][4]
