St Brice's Day massacre

The St. Brice's Day massacre was a mass killing of Danes on 13 November 1002 ordered by King Æthelred the Unready of England in response to a perceived threat, within territory under his control. King Æthelred’s army murdered men, women and children in peaceful villages, settlements and homesteads in his territory. The retaliation by the Danish King over the next few years would earn Æthelred the nickname Æthelred the Ill-Advised (or the Unready.)

The skeletons of over 30 young men and juveniles, found during an excavation at St John's College Oxford in 2008, may be some of those victims.
