Swamps of Belarus

Swamps, marshes, mires, bogs, and fens (all usually called "балота" (balota) in Belarusian) are important parts of the natural landscape in Belarus. Vast swamplands historically covered the country, and currently there are around 2.5 million hectares of wetlands in Belarus. Notable swamp regions are Pinsk Marshes and Olmany swamps in Polesia and Yelnya Swamp in Vitebsk region.
