Classificatiebureau

Een onderzoekingsbureau of classificatiebureau, vaak klassenbureau genoemd, is een niet-gouvernementele organisatie die de technische inspectie van schepen en offshore constructies uitvoert. De inspecties dienen om vast te stellen of vaartuigen aan bepaalde standaarden voldoet. Een classificatiebureau neemt echter expliciet geen verantwoordelijkheid voor de veiligheid en zeewaardigheid van de schepen.^[1]^[2]

Het eerste classificatiebureau was Lloyd's Register, opgericht in 1760.
