Cayn or Ayn is an administrative region that Puntland unilaterally declared to be established in the 2000s.^[1] However, in 2023 the region became one of the member regions of SSC-Khatumo, under the name of Sanaag, Sool, and Cayn (SSC) as its name implies, and effectively controls Region and it's capital buuhoodle.^[2]

Cayn is derived from Aynaba (Somali: Caynaba). Aynaba was inhabited by the Dhulbahante clan until the early 20th century, but the British government armed the isaaq clan and occupied during the Dervish movement. Since then, Aynaba has been the subject of conflict between isaaq and Ahmed Garaad sub division of larger Dhulbahanta.^[1]^: 61
