Eldoret is a city in the Rift Valley region of Kenya. It serves as the capital of Uasin Gishu County. Located in western Kenya and lying south of the Cherangani Hills, the local elevation varies from about 2,100 metres (6,900 ft) at the Eldoret International Airport to more than 2,700 metres (8,900 ft) in nearby areas.
As per the 2019 population census,[2] Eldoret has a population of 475,716 people and is the fifth most populated urban area in the country after Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Ruiru.[3][1][4]
A long standing municipality, Eldoret was conferred city status on 15 August 2024, making it the fifth city of Kenya.[5]
The city is a significant urban area in Kenya; it is the second largest medical destination in Kenya after Nairobi[6] and hosts the largest university student population outside of the nation's capital. Its international airport is ranked as the nation's second busiest cargo airport after JKIA in Nairobi[7] and has the second largest coverage by financial institutions outside of the capital with over 40 branches in town.[6] The city also hosts a substantial manufacturing sector.
