Crnogorski jezik, maternji jezik Crnogoraca jest normativna varijanta srpskohrvatskog jezika[5][6][7] koju uglavnom koriste Crnogorci. Crnogorski je zasnovan na najrasprostranjenijem dijalektu srpskohrvatskog, štokavskog, tačnije na istočnohercegovačkom, koji je i osnova standardnog hrvatskog, srpskog i bosanskog.[8]

Crnogorski jezik se historijski i tradicionalno naziva srpskim ili crnogorskim.[9][10][11][12] Ideja o standardizovanom crnogorskom standardnom jeziku odvojenom od srpskog pojavila se 1990-ih godina tokom raspada Jugoslavije, preko zagovornika nezavisnosti Crne Gore od Državne zajednice Srbije i Crne Gore. Crnogorski je postao službeni jezik Crne Gore ratifikacijom novog ustava 22. oktobra 2007.
