Rupert Murdoch, AC, KCSG (Melbourne, 1931) és un empresari dels mitjans de comunicació australià.^[1]^[2] És l'accionista majoritari i de la News Corporation (o News Corp.), una de les empreses de comunicació més poderoses i influents del món, que controla mitjançant una corporació familiar. La News Corp. abasta diaris, revistes i emissores de televisió des d'Austràlia fins a la Gran Bretanya, passant pels EUA. En els darrers anys, el grup s'ha expandit en àrees de negoci com la televisió per satèl·lit (Fox Television, DirecTV), la indústria cinematogràfica (20th Century Fox) o Internet (MySpace).^[3] Amb una riquesa d'uns 21.7 bilions de dòlars, a data de2 de març de 2022, Murdoch és la 31a persona més rica dels Estats Units i la 71a més rica de tot el món segons la revista Forbes.^[4]

Fill del periodista Keith Rupert Murdoch, amb qui no gaudia d'una bona relació el 1952, a la seva mort rebé en herència, del seu pare el diari Adelaide News. Amb tot, Murdoch comprà diversos diaris d'àmbit local i el 1964 aconseguí posar en marxa The Australian, diari de tirada nacional. El 1976 comprà el New York Post i el 1985 es llançà al mercat televisiu comprant Metromedia i reconvertint-lo per a crear el canal Fox.

Molts dels diaris i canals de televisió de Murdoch han estat acusats de esbiaixats i de fer cobriments propagandístics per donar suport als interessos de les seves empreses^[5]^[6]^[7] i aliats polítics,^[8]^[9]^[10] i alguns han atribuït la seva influència en els principals esdeveniments polítics al Regne Unit, als Estats Units i a Austràlia.^[8]^[11]^[12]
