On 10 May 2024, the Russian Armed Forces began an offensive operation in Ukraine's Kharkiv Oblast, shelling and attempting to breach the defenses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the direction of Vovchansk and Kharkiv.[3] The Guardian reported that the offensive has led to Russia's biggest territorial gains in 18 months.[4] By early June the Russian offensive stalled, with The Guardian reporting that the situation on the frontline had been "stabilized."[5] Ukrainian forces then began a concerted counterattack, which liberated its first settlement on 19 June.[6]
The Russian armed forces have also launched raids into the Sumy Oblast,[7] the Chernigov Oblast,[8] and other segments of the Kharkiv Oblast,[9] in an effort to draw Ukrainian resources away from the main offensive in Kharkiv.[10]
