Bagne

A bagne is a penal establishment for forced labor, often located in penal colonies in french history. Not all convicts were sentenced to forced labor.[1]

The word "bagne" comes from the Italian bagno, name of a prison in Livorno built on the site of a therma, an ancient Roman Bathhouse.[2]
