Boxing in Mexico

Boxing in Mexico is one of the most popular sports in the country, with a tradition dating back to the 19th century. It is practiced both amateur and professionally.[1][2] At the professional level, it has more than 150 world champions, making it the country with the second most world champions, behind only the United States.[3] It has also participated in the Olympic Games. In total, Mexico has won 14 medals, of which two are gold, four are silver, and eight are bronze.

Throughout the history of boxing, Mexico has been locked in a rivalry with Puerto Rico, which intensified beginning in the 1970s. Both nations have two of the most important boxing schools, whose boxers have starred in numerous lightweight title fights.[4]
