Eldoret is a town and urban centre in Kenya. Gazetted as a municipality, it is in the Rift Valley region and serves as the capital of Uasin Gishu County. Lying south of the Cherangani Hills, the local elevation varies from about 2,100 metres (6,900 ft) at the airport to more than 2,700 metres (8,900 ft) in nearby areas.
As per the 2019 population census,[2] Eldoret has a population of 475,716 people and is the fifth most populated urban area in the country after Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Ruiru.[3] With a population of 289,380 in the 2009 Census,[1][4] it is considered the fastest growing town in Kenya.
The town is a significant urban area in Kenya; it is the second largest medical destination in Kenya after Nairobi[5] and it hosts the largest university student population outside of the nations capital. It's international airport is ranked as the second busiest cargo airport after JKIA in Nairobi[6] and it also has the second largest coverage by financial institutions outside of the capital with over 40 branches in town.[5] The town also hosts a substantial manufacturing sector.
The town was referred to as Farm 64 during the colonial period and is still colloquially referred to by locals as 'Sisibo'.[7]
