Emperor Wu of Southern Qi (南齊武帝) (440– 27 August 493[3]), personal name Xiao Ze (蕭賾), courtesy name Xuanyuan (宣遠), childhood name Long'er (龍兒), was the second emperor of the Chinese Southern Qi dynasty. He is generally considered to be an able and diligent emperor, although he is also criticized for leading a lavish lifestyle.[4]

  1. ^ The title was awarded posthumously, as Emperor Wu's wife Pei Huizhao had died on 15 Aug 480 (wu'wu day of the 7th month of the 2nd year of the Jian'yuan era, per Emperor Gao's biography in Nan Qi Shu).
  2. ^ According to Xiao Ze's biography in Book of Southern Qi, the Yongming era was declared on the xinhai day of the 1st month of the 1st year of that era, which corresponds to 25 Jan 483 on the Julian calendar. (永明元年春正月辛亥,車駕祠南郊,大赦,改元。) Nan Qi Shu, vol.03
  3. ^ According to Xiao Ze's biography in Book of Southern Qi, he fell gravely ill on the wuyin day of the 7th month of the 11th year of the Yongming era of his reign, and later died aged 54 (by East Asian reckoning) on the same day. This corresponds to 27 Aug 493 on the Julian calendar. ([永明十一年七月]戊寅,大漸。...是日上崩,年五十四。)
  4. ^ (上剛毅有斷,政總大體,以富國為先。颇喜遊宴、雕綺之事,言常恨之,未能頓遣。) Nan Shi, vol.04. Xiao Ze's biography in Book of Southern Qi also had a similar evaluation of him.
