European settlers in New Zealand

European settlers in New Zealand, locally also known as Pākehā settlers, began arriving in the country in the early 19th century as immigrants of various types, initially settling mainly around the Bay of Islands. Large-scale organised emigration from Britain to other regions began from the 1840s, such as to Wellington, Hawke's Bay, Canterbury and Otago.
