Goaltender (field lacrosse)

A man wearing a red jersey and shorts with a white helmet and gloves holds a white stick with a large meshed area on one end just above a square of metal rods with netting behind it. On the right another man, wearing white jersey and green trim but otherwise similarly attired to the first, holds a similar stick with a much smaller head at his right.
A Sacred Heart goaltender stops a Wagner College player's shot.

In field lacrosse, the goaltender (goalie, goalkeeper, tendy defendy or the keeper) is the most important and last line of defense between the opposing offense and the goal. The goaltender's primary roles are to defend the opposing team's shots on goal and to direct the defense.
