Imperial College London (Imperial) is a public research university in London, England. Established by royal charter in 1907, the college was formed out of the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines and the City and Guilds of London Institute.[6] These colleges had developed out of Albertopolis, an area for culture and meseums envisioned by Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria, that included the Royal Albert Hall, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum and royal colleges.[7][8] In 1988, the Imperial College School of Medicine was formed as part of the college's Faculty of Medicine by merging with St Mary's Hospital Medical School. In 2004, Queen Elizabeth II opened the Imperial College Business School.
The university focuses on science, engineering, medicine and business.[9][10][11] The main campus is in South Kensington, with a second research campus in White City serving as a research translation hub.[12] The college also operates teaching hospitals across London, forming an academic health science centre. It was previously a constituent college of the University of London and became an independent university in 2007.[13] Imperial also has an international community, with over 60% international students and around 140 countries represented on campus.[14][15]
