Islam is the dominant religion in Tunisia. According to the United States CIA, 99.1% of its adherents are Sunni Muslims.[1][2] The constitution of Tunisia states that the country's “religion is Islam”, the government is the “guardian of religion”, and requires that the president be Muslim.[1] However, since 2022 The constitution of Tunisia does not state that the country's "religion is Islam". Instead, it says that the country is part of the Islamic world and that the government protects the interests of Islam and requires that the president be Muslim.[3] The predominant madhhab in the country is the Maliki. The Tunisian island of Djerba is home to a population of Ibadi Muslims.
