The official state language of Moldova is Romanian, which is the mother language of 79.2% of the population (as of the 2024 census). It is also spoken as a primary language by other ethnic minorities.
Romanian is also locally known as "Moldovan"; 49.2% of Moldovans declared their mother language to be "Moldovan" in 2024 and 31.3% declared it to be Romanian explicitly. There is a significant controversy over whether Moldova's official language should be called Romanian or "Moldovan". The former is named in the Declaration of Independence of Moldova, is supported by the country's Academy of Sciences and Constitutional Court and is present in the 1994 Constitution of Moldova since 2023. The latter is named by a 1989 law of the then-Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, and it is nowadays a more common designation.
