Lesley Ann Manville[1] CBE (born 12 March 1956)[2] is an English actress known for her frequent collaborations with Mike Leigh, appearing in the films Grown-Ups (1980), High Hopes (1988), Secrets & Lies (1996), Topsy-Turvy (1999), All or Nothing (2002), Vera Drake (2004), Another Year (2010), and Mr. Turner (2014). She has been nominated for two British Academy Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her roles in Another Year (2010) and Phantom Thread (2017), with her performance in the latter earning her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Manville has also appeared in the films Dance with a Stranger (1985), High Season (1987), The Firm (1989), The Great Ecstasy of Robert Carmichael (2005), Sparkle (2007), A Christmas Carol (2009), Womb (2010), Spike Island (2012), Maleficent (2014), Molly Moon and the Incredible Book of Hypnotism (2015), Rupture (2016), Hampstead (2017), Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019), Let Him Go (2020), Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (2022), The Critic (2023) and Back to Black (2024).
She has also appeared in the television series Emmerdale (1974–1976), A Bunch of Fives (1977), Soldier Soldier (1992), Goggle-Eyes (1993), Little Napoleons (1994), The Bite (1996), Painted Lady (1997), The Cazalets (2001), North & South (2004), Cranford (2007), Mayday (2013), Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond (2014), River (2015), Harlots (2016–2019), Mum (2016–2019) World on Fire (2019–2023), Love Life (2020), I Am... Maria (2021), Sherwood (2022) and Citadel (2023). She portrayed Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon in the final two seasons of the television series The Crown (2022–2023).[3][4]
Manville has had an extensive stage career having appearing in Chorus Girls (1981), Top Girls (1982), Saved (1984), As You Like It (1985–1986), Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1986), Serious Money (1987), Miss Julie (1990), His Dark Materials (2005), The Alchemist (2006), All About My Mother (2007), Her Naked Skin (2008), Six Degrees of Separation (2010), Grief (2011), Long Day's Journey into Night (2026, 2018) and The Visit (2020). A three-time Laurence Olivier Award nominee, she has won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress for her role in the 2013–2014 revival of the play Ghosts.
