The Epic Games Store (EGS) employs a customer acquisition strategy involving time-limited free distribution of commercial games.[1] During promotional periods, users can claim permanent digital licenses for selected titles at no cost. After the promotion concludes, the games revert to their standard pricing.[2]
This program was introduced on December 7, 2018, a day after EGS was launched. Subnautica was the first game offered, followed by Super Meat Boy two weeks later. Epic Games announced the company would give away a new game every two weeks for the entire duration of 2019.[1] In May 2019 Epic Games doubled the frequency of giveaways, offering a new free game every week.[3][4] In December 2019, as part of a winter sale, Epic Games gave away 16 games, most of them were available for 24 hours.[5] Similar promotions have continued in following years.[6][7][8]
According to Tim Sweeney, Epic Games' founder and CEO, all promotional activities are coordinated with game developers, who receive a fixed monetary compensation regardless of the number of copies distributed.[9] Documents disclosed during the Epic Games v. Apple legal proceedings revealed that the distribution of 38 games from December 2018 to September 2019 incurred a cost of $11.6 million for the company. This initiative resulted in attracting 1.3 million new users to the service, with 7% of these users subsequently making at least one purchase.[9][10] At that moment the most expensive campaign was the giveaway of Batman trilogy—Epic Games paid $1.5 million to give away Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Knight. The second and third most expensive campaigns were Subnautica ($1.4 million) and Mutant Year Zero ($1 million) respectively. The fee for indie games was significantly lower, e.g. the developers of Super Meat Boy got the compensation of $50,000.[9] Eurogamer's analysis revealed substantial variations in promotion efficiency: Mutant Year Zero's giveaway cost $5.05 per new customer, while Super Meat Boy's promotion cost Epic Games $0.52 per person attracted.[11]
By May 2020, Epic Games had given away 108 games. According to PCGamesN, Epic Games gave away $2,140 worth of games, excluding discounts and regional prices.[12] In May 2020 Total War Saga: Troy was released in Epic Games Store for free for 24 hours; about 7.5 million people claimed the game during this period, exceeding the developer's expectations.[13] By August 2021, the most successful campaigns were Grand Theft Auto V (7 million new accounts), Civilization VI (2.5 million), and Subnautica (less than a million).[14] The high demand during the GTA V giveaway caused server disruptions, rendering the service unavailable for eight hours.[15] According to Epic Games, in 2022 the company gave away 99 games with total worth of $2,240; during this period clients claimed about 700,000,000 free copies.[16]
