The House of Commons of Northern Ireland was the lower chamber of the bicameral Parliament of Northern Ireland. The Parliament was created under the Government of Ireland Act 1920,[1] and first met after a general election held on 24 May 1921.[2] Parliament was suspended on 30 March 1972,[1] when the Northern Ireland (Temporary Provisions) Act 1972 imposed direct rule from London, and was formally abolished on 18 July 1973 under the Northern Ireland Constitution Act 1973.[1]
The House of Commons had 52 members, known as MPs. They were elected by single transferable vote (STV) in the 1921 and 1925 elections, and from 1929 onwards by first-past-the-post, except for the 4-seat Queen's University of Belfast constituency which retained STV until its abolition in 1969.[1]
