Melville Wilkinson

Captain Melville Cary Wilkinson (1835–1898) is best known as the founder and superintendent of the Forest Grove Indian School (later changed to Chemawa Indian School), at Salem, Oregon. Like his east coast counterpart Richard Henry Pratt, Wilkinson was an assimilationist who believed that forced education was a solution to the “Indian question.”^[1]
