Names of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී ලංකා, romanized: Śrī Lankā; Tamil: சிறி லங்கா / இலங்கை, romanized: Ilaṅkai), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island country in the northern Indian Ocean which has been known under various names over time.

The oldest recorded name of Sri Lanka is Tamraparni[1] (= Taprobane). Six centuries before Christ, it was named Simhalam[2] (Simhala [3] in Pali). Simhalam became Saylan mentioned from the 9th century.[4] Lanka appears between the 10th[5] and the 12th centuries after Christ.[3]
