The Chicago Portal

Chicago is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Illinois and in the Midwestern United States. With a population of 2,746,388, as of the 2020 census, it is the third-most populous city in the United States after New York City and Los Angeles. As the seat of Cook County, the second-most populous county in the U.S., Chicago is the center of the Chicago metropolitan area, often colloquially called "Chicagoland" and home to 9.6 million residents.

Chicago is an international hub for finance, culture, commerce, industry, education, technology, telecommunications, and transportation. It has the largest and most diverse derivatives market in the world, generating 20% of all volume in commodities and financial futures alone. O'Hare International Airport is routinely ranked among the world's top six busiest airports by passenger traffic, and the region is also the nation's railroad hub. The Chicago area has one of the highest gross domestic products (GDP) of any urban region in the world, generating $689 billion in 2018. The 2000 United States House of Representatives election for the 1st district in Illinois took place on November 7, 2000 to elect a representative from Illinois's 1st congressional district for the 107th United States Congress. Incumbent Democratic Representative Bobby Rush faced a primary challenge from Barack Obama. Rush defeated Obama 61 percent to 30 percent, with other candidates combining for the remaining nine percent. Rush then defeated his Republican opponent, Raymond Wardingley, 87 percent to 12 percent, ensuring his reelection. Subsequent to this election Obama was elected to the United States Senate in 2004. He was then elected President of the United States in 2008.

This is a discography for the Smoking Popes, a pop punk band from Lake in the Hills, Illinois. The Smoking Popes have released four studio albums, a compilation album, two live albums, four extended plays (EPs), and seven singles. The group was founded in 1991 by Mike Felumlee (drums) and brothers Matt (bass guitar), Eli (guitar), and Josh Caterer (guitar, vocals). After releasing three independent EPs, the Popes signed with local punk rock record label Johann's Face Records. Johann's Face issued a fourth EP and the Popes' first two studio albums—Get Fired and Born to Quit. EMI subsidiary Capitol Records signed the band and re-released Born to Quit in 1995, yielding a minor hit on punk rock radio stations with "Need You Around". The Smoking Popes released their third album through Capitol in 1997 and broke up the following year. To fulfill their contract with Capitol Records, the band recorded an album of cover songs, which was rejected for release by the label. The Popes were dormant until they reunited in late 2005. The band played a reunion show on November 11, 2005, recording and releasing the concert through Felumlee's Double Zero Records. They are currently working on a fourth studio album for Flameshovel Records.

Selected biography

Joseph Bert Tinker was an American professional baseball player and manager. He played from 1902 through 1916 for the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Chicago Whales of the Federal League. Born in Muscotah, Kansas, Tinker began playing semi-professional baseball in Kansas in the late 19th century. He began his professional career in 1900 in minor league baseball and made his MLB debut with the Cubs in 1902. Tinker was a member of the Chicago Cubs dynasty that won four pennants and two World Series championships between 1906 and 1910. After playing one season with Cincinnati in 1913, he became one of the first stars to jump to the upstart Federal League in 1914. After leading the Whales to the pennant in 1915, he returned to the Cubs as their player-manager in 1916, his final season in MLB. Tinker returned to minor league baseball as a part-owner and manager for the Columbus Senators before moving to Orlando, Florida, to manage the Orlando Tigers. While in Orlando, Tinker developed a real estate firm, which thrived during the Florida land boom of the 1920s. However, the 1926 Miami hurricane and Great Depression cost Tinker most of his fortune, and he returned to professional baseball in the late 1930s. With the Cubs, Tinker was a part of a great double-play combination with teammates Johnny Evers and Frank Chance that was immortalized as "Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance" in the poem "Baseball's Sad Lexicon". However, Evers and Tinker feuded off the field. Tinker was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946, the same year as Evers and Chance.

The Chicago Theatre is a famous theater landmark located on North State Street in the Loop community area in the city of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The theater is host to stage plays, magic shows, comedy performances, speeches, and concerts. Although it now emphasizes live performances of popular music, it once served as a motion picture theatre. For several decades, it was the city's premier movie theater. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 6, 1979, and it was listed as a Chicago Landmark on January 28, 1983. The marquee is a Chicago cultural and physical landmark that commonly appears in film, television, artwork, and photography.
