Raspberry Pi OS is a Unix-like operating system based on the Debian Linux distribution for the Raspberry Pi family of compact single-board computers. Raspbian was developed independently in 2012 for the Raspberry Pi 1 and became the primary operating system distributed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation for these boards in 2013.[3] In 2020, the Raspberry Pi Foundation renamed the version of the operating system that it distributed from Raspbian to Raspberry Pi OS.

Raspberry Pi OS runs on every Raspberry Pi except the Pico microcontroller. Raspberry Pi OS uses a modified LXDE desktop environment with the Openbox stacking window manager, along with a unique theme. The default distribution is shipped with a copy of the computer algebra system Wolfram Mathematica,[4] VLC, and a lightweight version of the Chromium web browser.
