Liechtenstein has recognized same-sex registered partnerships since 1 September 2011 following approval by voters in a referendum. Liechtenstein was the second country in the world to pass a partnership law by referendum, after Switzerland in 2005.
In November 2022, the Landtag passed a motion calling on the government to introduce a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, with broad support from across the political spectrum. On 11 August 2022, Prince Alois said that same-sex marriage is "not a major problem",[1] and opinion polls show that a majority of the Liechtenstein public supports same-sex marriage.[2] A bill legalizing same-sex marriage passed its first reading on 8 March 2024 by a 24–1 vote.[3] It passed its final reading on 16 May 2024, and will come into effect on 1 January 2025.[4]
