Shangyong Commandery (上庸郡) was a short-lived but strategically vital commandery astride the upper Han River between the Qinling Mountains and the Wuling Mountains. Founded in 215 CE to control the mountain corridor that linked Hanzhong with central Jingzhou, it became the focal point of several contests among the warlords Cao Cao, Liu Bei and their successors. The unit survived—with interruptions—into the sixth century, when the Liang dynasty finally abolished it.
