"greater" and "lesser" jihad are only mentioned in one, obscure hadith that isn't even considered authentic by most. Furthermore, most, if not all references, to jihad in Islamic scripture are of the physical, violent kind. There are at least 109 verses in the Qur'an itself that call Muslims to fight non-Muslims. Qur'an (66:9) - "O Prophet! Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be stern with them. Hell will be their home, a hapless journey's end."
