Theodore John Leonsis (born January 8, 1957) is an American businessman. He is a former senior executive with America Online (AOL), and the founder, chairman, and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, Washington Mystics, and Monumental Sports Network.

Raised in a working-class family in Brooklyn, New York, Leonsis graduated from Georgetown University in 1977. He began his career in corporate communications and marketing roles at Wang Laboratories and Harris Corporation before venturing into entrepreneurship by founding LIST, a personal computing magazine, which he later sold to Thomson Reuters.

Leonsis's career includes 13 years at America Online, where he held various senior executive positions and contributed to the company's growth until his retirement in 2006. In the sports industry, Leonsis is the founder, majority owner, chairman, and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, overseeing the Washington Capitals (NHL), Washington Wizards (NBA), Washington Mystics (WNBA), and the Capital One Arena. His accomplishments include expanding the franchise's influence and securing investments for team facilities.

In addition to his ventures in technology and sports, Leonsis has produced several award-winning documentaries through his company SnagFilms, including "Nanking" and "Kicking It." He also co-founded Revolution Money, which was sold to American Express, and remains active in various business and philanthropic endeavors. Leonsis has served on the board of directors at Georgetown University and founded the Leonsis Foundation. He has also engaged in political activities, including contributions to presidential campaigns and a brief tenure as the mayor of Orchid, Florida.

With a net worth of $2.8 billion, he is one of the wealthiest individuals in the Washington, D.C., area.[2] As CEO of Monumental Sports, he has used the threat of leaving Washington D.C. to demand that District of Columbia taxpayers subsidize the operations of his D.C.-based teams.
