Temple University (Temple or TU) is a public state-related research university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1884 by the Baptist minister Russell Conwell and his congregation Grace Baptist Church of Philadelphia then called Baptist Temple.[5] On May 12, 1888, it was renamed the Temple College of Philadelphia.
By 1907, the institution had transformed it status and been incorporated as a research university. It is recognized as an R1 research institution on the list of research universities in the United States[6][7] by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The R1 institutes demonstrate the "higest research activity," which is roughly the top 4% of colleges and universities in the United States [8].
As of 2020,[update] about 37,289 undergraduate, graduate and professional students were enrolled at the university.[2] Temple is among the world's largest providers of professional education, preparing the largest body of professional practitioners in Pennsylvania.[9][10]
Temple University has historically maintained a high diverse student body, renowned for its dedication to inclusivity, offering numerous programs that promote community engagement, cultural enrichment, and mentorship opportunities. [11] As of 2022, the student demographic is as follows: 51% White, 15% Black or African American, 14% Asian, 9% Hispanic or Latino, 4% identifying as Two of More races, and 6% international students.
