"Young Palestinians do not go out to murder Jews because they are Jews, but because we are their occupiers, their torturers, their jailers, the thieves of their land and water, their exilers, the demolishers of their homes, the blockers of their horizon. Young Palestinians, vengeful and desperate, are willing to lose their lives and cause their families great pain because the enemy they face proves every day that its malice has no limits." - Amira Hass

A handful of editors I have recently interacted with made a choice to weaponize my TBAN in content disagreements so I feel obliged to write this up.

Yes, I have been topic banned from a contentious topic area. I have been told by the banning administrator that the ban is appealable in six months, and I intend to exercise that right when the time comes. For now, this means that I cannot edit stuff about that topic (broadly construed). There are a lot of things that this does not mean. I will list some of them below.

  • It does not mean that I cannot edit (including bold, controversial edits) in other contentious topic areas.
  • It does not mean that my views and opinions as an editor inherently have less merit.
  • It does not give you a license to harass, bully and defame me on article talk pages because of my sanction.
  • It does not let you bypass the consensus process by discarding my arguments or reverting my edits because you think I am unqualified to edit because of the topic ban.

Per WP:PA, it "is as unacceptable to attack a user ... who has been blocked, banned, or otherwise sanctioned, as it is to attack any other user." Also per WP:PA, editors should "comment on content, not contributors."

It is possible that I make a mistake or violate some policy as an editor. I certainly don't want to do this, especially since my goal is to have a successful ban appeal! However, even if I do screw up, it is still not appropriate to bludgeon unrelated discussions with personal attacks. There are processes that exist which deal with conduct.
