The European Destubathon
a stub improvement contest/editathon
for April 1–30, 2025...
Welcome to the European Destubathon! It is a general stub elimination contest, mainly sponsored by the Open Knowledge Association (OKA) along with Wikimedia UK and an independent donor, in the vein of the highly successful African Destubathon contest, with the intention to cover all the topics and countries of Europe. The idea is simple: Try to have a lot of fun in blasting away as many of our 760,000 + European stubs as possible! There is £2294 (roughly $2885) available in total in prizes for this, to whoever fleshes out the most stubs overall, and the most destubs by country of Europe and the most stubs expanded by topic. With around 66 different prizes there's a good chance you can easily win one if you think strategically. The idea is that editors use their prizes to buy books to help them further contribute to Wikipedia, though obviously they can be spent on anything you want!
All that is required for this is basic stub article expansions and improvements. To "destub" an article all you have to do is ensure it is minimum 1.5 kB (1500 characters) of readable prose (excluding infoboxes, references, markup, lists and categories) in total and reasonably well-written, though if there is an abundance of information try to surpass the requirement comfortably. The existing text and text you add is expected to all be verifiable and adequately sourced to reliable sources with the expected citations fully drawn up, while avoiding copyright and paraphrasing. No unverified claims. Whoever "destubs" the most articles for a given country and topic wins a prize, and whoever has the most "destubs" overall will be crowned the overall winner.
Entries submitted here will be added to the overall 20,000 European Challenge, The 20,000 Challenge for the UK and Ireland, and Wikipedia:The 50,000 Destubbing Challenge at the end of the contest. Even if you don't want prizes, you're welcome to participate in this as an editathon and find something to enjoy this spring!
