Another in Gog's occasional series of articles on treaties and truces. In the nominator's own words: "It is 1359, the Hundred Years' War has been running for 22 years. Things have gone from bad to worse for the French, culminating in the French king being captured at the Battle of Poitiers, where most of the nobility of France were also either killed or captured. Yes, an opportunity to quantify a 'king's ransom'..."!
Confederate Major General George B. Crittenden's story is not short on irony: son of John J. Crittenden, a congressman who tried to prevent the Civil War, and brother of Thomas L. Crittenden, who became a major general in the Union Army. As HF notes, this was probably the highest-ranking instance of brother against brother. George was also a heavy drinker and often relied on his father to get him out of trouble.
The Royal Air Force and Royal Navy operated 181 F-4 Phantom fighters between the 1960s and early 1990s. Initially purchased owing to difficulties in developing British-designed aircraft, the Phantoms proved successful and were deployed around the world. Three models were ordered for the British military, most of these aircraft including significant modifications from the standard US variants.
This article covers a pair of armored cruisers built for the German Imperial Navy in the 1900s. The two ships served in the reconnaissance force of the High Seas Fleet after they entered service in 1905–1906. Their design was inferior to British equivalents, and they were decommissioned a few years later when superior battlecruisers entered the navy. Both were reactivated upon the outbreak of World War I. One of the ships was sunk in November 1914 and the other was reduced to a training and accommodation ship in 1916.
Zhao Chongguo was a Chinese military commander and official during the Western Han dynasty. Starting from around 100 BC, he served in various cavalry roles. In 74 BC, he collaborated with the political leader Huo Guang to depose the newly-enthroned emperor Liu He in favor of Emperor Xuan. Zhao later led a successful campaign in the Qinghai region. This was Generalissima's first A-class nomination.
The Battle of Arkansas Post was fought for control of a fort from January 9 to 11, 1863 at Arkansas Post, Arkansas, as part of the Vicksburg campaign of the American Civil War. Union forces under Major General John A. McClernand attacked the fort to end the raids that were being launched from it. While the Union attack was repulsed, part of the Confederate garrison surrendered in confusing circumstances, leading to the capitulation of the remainder.
