CONSENSUS TO RETHINK WP:SPS

In this RfC, the community discusses the future of WP:SPS. The RfC's design attracts much obloquy, and I think the takeaways for RFC designers from that are:

a) If you want the community to think, then use short, open questions;
b) If you want the community to vote, then use short, closed questions; and
c) If you've put long tracts of required reading in collapse boxes, editors are going be cross with you.

On the substantive points at issue, we've learned:

1) The community doesn't love the current wording of WP:SPS, and it isn't working for us. There's a clear consensus to change it.
2) The community doesn't coalesce around any of the options on the menu in this RfC.

This RfC is to determine the consensus about (1) whether the current explanation of "self-published" in WP:SPS generally serves us well, perhaps with small improvements, or if it should be revised in some significant way, and (2) how editors interpret "self-published," in order to help us revise the explanation if needed.
