No, you're overthinking it. When someone is sockpuppeting, the thing they're literally doing is speaking through other accounts to disguise that all of the opinions/statements are coming from them. So the joke only works if it's "the sockpuppet says" — with the implication of that being, therefore, that the sockpuppeteer is the one saying it, and has been controlling all three accounts #ThisWholeTime.
