Usualmente, culpa a una élite global y liberal,[13] como la Unión Europea, de dirigir un complot o mecanismo para llevar a cabo el reemplazo de los pueblos europeos.[11]
Fue popularizada por Renaud Camus. Este concepto de reemplazo, o el de «genocidio blanco», se ha replicado a través de la retórica de varios movimientos de extrema derecha en Occidente.[16] Entre sus principales promotores no solo están los partidos populistas de derecha, sino también una amplia red de movimientos protestatarios (por ejemplo Pegida), grupúsculos ideológicos (por ejemplo Les Identitaires),[17] blogueros (por ejemplo Lauren Southern)[18] y periodistas (por ejemplo Eric Zemmour). Importantes sitios web de derecha, tales como Gates of Vienna, Politically Incorrect y France de Souche, han ofrecido a los blogueros plataformas para difundir la teoría.[19]
