Gereja Katolik adalah sebuah "persekutuan gereja-gereja, baik Roma atau Timur, atau Oriental, yang berada dalam persekutuan penuh dengan Uskup Roma (Sri Paus)." [2] Gereja tersebut juga dikenal sebagai Umat Allah, Tubuh Kristus, "Bait Roh Kudus", dan nama lainnya.[3] Menurut Gaudium et spes dari Vatikan II, "gereja memiliki satu tujuan tunggal -- kedatangan kerajaan Allah dan keselamatan umat manusia yang menyertainya."[4][5]
