L'HD DVD (high definition digital versatile disk^[1]) è un formato di disco ottico digitale creato da Toshiba, ideato principalmente per sostituire i DVD come supporto di memoria ad alta definizione, in diretta competizione con il Blu-ray Disc creato da Sony^[1].^[2]

Promosso come standard dall'HD DVD Promotion Group, composto dalle società giapponesi Toshiba, Sanyo e NEC^[3], il formato è stato adottato da DreamWorks^[4], Paramount Pictures^[1], Universal Pictures^[2]^[5] e da Warner Home Video^[5]^[6] per l'home video e da Microsoft^[2] tramite lettore esterno per l'Xbox 360^[7].

Nel 2008 Toshiba ha abbandonato il formato^[8]^[9], a cui è seguito lo scioglimento dell'HD DVD Promotion Group^[10].
