Mao Zedong (26 December 1893 – 9 September 1976) was a Chinese Communist politician and revolutionary who was the 1st Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party from 1943 until his death in 1976, the 1st President of China from 1949 to 1959, and the 1st and 8th Chairman of the Central Military Commission[a]. Mao is criticised for his policies that led to the Great Chinese Famine, causing millions of deaths, and the Cultural Revolution, which resulted in widespread persecution and suffering.
