The Tyrrhenian Sea (/tɪˈriːniən, -ˈreɪ-/, tih-REE-nee-ən ,-RAY-;^[1] Italian: Mar Tirreno [mar tirˈrɛːno] or [-ˈreː-], French: Mer Tyrrhénienne [mɛʁ tiʁenjɛn])^{[note 1]} is part of the Mediterranean Sea off the western coast of Italy. It is named for the Tyrrhenian people identified with the Etruscans of Italy.
